Taking Charge in a Managed Care World
Do you want to know more about how the managed care organizations allow you to have a voice, make choices and have control? This preconference session will feature a panel discussion with representatives from the managed care organizations who will talk about the opportunities available for you to make decisions and live the life you want to live.
Facebook: Getting Started
If you are not currently using social media, this session is for you! We will help you get started by walking through the process of setting up your Facebook page. If you have a laptop or tablet, bring it with you so you can set up your account during the session. If you don’t, that’s okay too — we will give you step-by-step instruction to take home with you. This session will also cover the basic functions of Facebook so you can start creating connections to build your social network.
Living in a Social World
We live in a social world. More than 1 billion (seriously…A BILLION) people log on to Facebook every single day, and there are more than 310 million active Twitter users each month. This session will focus on taking a more in-depth look at social media platforms and the skills and knowledge you need to be an engaged user. When you register, make sure to let us know which social media platforms you are interested in learning more about. We will adapt the presentation based on what you want to know!
Guardianship: It Isn’t Black and White
Take a look into the world of guardianship. In this session, we will talk about guardianship in a realistic way by diving into real decisions people make every day. We will start by covering guardianship laws (because… well, you have to), so you can learn more about opportunities to have a say in your guardianship. He will also cover the proper steps to take if you’re unhappy with a part of your guardianship as well as taking a team approach to supportive decision-making.
I’ve Got a Feeling…
Feelings of attraction and desire in human relationships are natural emotions for everyone! This session will focus on the meaning of sexuality and explore many of the emotions related to self-image, attraction, developing connections with others and understanding our physical bodies.
Focus on Ability
Just as we all learn differently, we all have different strengths and abilities. This session will help you learn what your strengths are and how to use those strengths and abilities to work as a member of a team. Participants will divide into groups of six, and each person on the team will use their greatest strength to compete against the other teams. By relying on each member’s abilities, participants will learn the value of the contribution each person brings to the team.
How Self-Determined Am I?
Join us for Be Your Own Super Hero! What the super heroes teach us about self-determination and how we can use that in our lives. This playful and interactive session will use super heroes to help you to answer three questions: How self-determined am I? What does that mean? What can I do to take charge of my life?
Everyone will leave with one thing that they can do to take more control of their life and their world. Bring your sense of play and favorite super hero and let's explore how we can change our worlds!
Leave Only Footprints
If a picture is worth a thousand words, how many words can you say with three pictures? This interactive session will get you out and moving around the resort. You will work as a part of a team on a scavenger hunt to take photos that describe a phrase your group is given. We will put the pictures you take into a slideshow that we will show at dinner on Thursday evening.
Eliminating Barriers to Voting
This session is designed to educate and inform attendees of their rights and responsibilities as voters. We will cover the most common barriers that prevent Iowans from voting and focus on ways to overcome them. The training will help participants become comfortable using accessible voting machines and other voting equipment. Attendees can also register to vote and request absentee ballots during the session.
Separating the Facts from the Fiction
In the months leading up to an election, we are bombarded with so much information that it can become difficult to know what to believe. How do we as voters separate the truth from the hype and the spin? In this session, we will discuss how you can sift through all of that information to find the facts. You’ll learn how to understand a candidate’s position on issues important to you and make an informed decision on Election Day.

The 2016 general election will be here before we know it, and it is time to start preparing now. ID Action offers a voter training to inform and educate Iowans with disabilities about the election process. The training focuses on assisting participants to overcome barriers to voting and provides the opportunity to register to vote, request an absentee ballot and become comfortable with Iowa’s election equipment.
As the host, all you need to do is find the location and send out the invites. ID Action staff will provide the training and materials you need to be prepared to vote in November.
If you are interested in hosting a training in your community, please contact ID Action at 866-432-2846 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
